Privacy Policy for WillHint

WillHint (“the extension”) is a Chrome browser extension that explains confusing words and phrases using AI, delivered as native browser notifications.

Data We Collect

Website content and selected text

When you select text or enable auto-scan, the selected text or a short excerpt of visible page content is sent to the AI provider you configured (Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, or a custom endpoint). This is the core function of the extension.

User activity

The extension monitors text selection events to detect when you highlight two or more words, in order to trigger automatic explanations. No keystroke logging, click tracking, or scroll history is recorded.

Data We Do NOT Collect

Your name, email address, or any personally identifiable information
Passwords or authentication credentials
Financial information
Location data
Browsing history
Personal communications

API Key Storage

Your AI provider API key is stored exclusively in chrome.storage.local on your own device. It is:

Never uploaded to Google’s sync servers
Never transmitted to any server operated by WillHint
Sent directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider when generating explanations

Third-Party Services

WillHint sends text to the AI provider you choose during setup. Your use of that provider is governed by their own privacy policy:

WillHint does not:

Sell user data to third parties
Transfer user data to third parties outside of sending text to your chosen AI provider
Use data for purposes unrelated to generating word explanations
Use data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published in this repository with a new Last updated date.
